From
"Preface To 2nd Edition" by the author:
In
the four years since its introduction in 2001,
the sales of this book have greatly exceeded my
expectations, particularly since they have been
purchased not only by professionals in boating
industries, but also by boaters and by people
from all over the world, something I never expected.
Between
the mid 1990's and today, the boating industry has changed
like never before. A vast array of new materials and
techniques has been introduced that strongly bear on
the surveyors work. This second edition endeavors to
bring it up to date as much as possible. The reader
should be aware that our collective knowledge about
how well new ideas and materials function runs close
to ten years behind the times. Our very small profession
has no general clearing house or common collection agency
of experience. Most sharing of information is done over
the telephone or occasional seminars. Moreover, it takes
quite a long time before problems become manifest and
then word gets around.
The
revisions concentrate primarily on the nature of new
materials and designs, in addition to the resurgence
of cored hull problems as exemplified by the Sea Ray
debacle.
To
accomplish this, chapters “Hull and Its Structure” and
“Surveying the Hull” are expanded, reorganized
and a new chapter “Using Moisture Meters” is
added for this edition.
Whether you are a beginner or just looking
to brush up on your knowledge and skills, marine surveyor David
Pascoe shares his knowledge and experience based on a 35 years career
surveying in the "yachting capitol of the world" Fort
Lauderdale, Florida.
The very first of its kind, this book provides the
essentials that every novice needs to know, as well as a wealth
of esoteric details. Loaded with over 200 photographs and
drawings by the author.

David
Pascoe is a second generation marine surveyor in his family and
who began his surveying career in 1965 as the era of wooden boats
was coming to an end. Certified by the National Association
of Marine Surveyors, he has conducted over 5,000 pre-purchase
surveys, in addition to having conducted hundreds of boating
accident investigations for insurance companies.
All that knowledge and experience is brought to bear in this book.
David Pascoe is the author
of "Buyers’ Guide to Outboard Boats" (2002), "Mid
Size Power Boats" (2003) and "Marine Investigations" (2004).
In addition to readers in the United States, boaters and boat industry professionals worldwide from over 60 countries have purchased David Pascoe's books, since introduction of his first book in 2001.
If you have been looking for a comprehensive text on surveying modern power boats and couldn't find one, look no more.
Written for both the aspiring, novice and experienced surveyor, it provides a foundation of essentials for anyone who wants to begin a marine surveying
career, or just hone up on one's skills and knowledge.
The profession of marine surveying is not just about boats; it's about people and boats. That's why four of its 18 chapters are devoted to the practicalities of the business side of surveying.
